What is backlink?
A reverse reference: if page A mentions page B, then B has a backlink from A. Backlinks turn a collection of documents into a graph, so you can start from any page and see what depends on it rather than only what it points to.
Why backlink matters
Forward links are easy and nearly useless for maintenance. The question that actually matters when a fact changes is 'what else says this?' — and only a backlink answers it. Without them, updating a decision means grepping your own documentation by memory.
